Concrete No Longer Precedes Abstract (sorry montessori)

After discussing the history of film in class, I've been interested in the potential  of combining analog film processes with animation like George Melies. These intricate processes appeal to me because I am accustomed to working with my hands, but I'd like to reach a higher level of mastery of digital film before I waste chemicals on experiments with negatives.
